A smell, a tone of voice, or the way a room is lit can pull your entire body into a survival response while your thinking mind is still trying to figure out what just happened.

The Nervous System Runs on Old Rules, Not Timelines

Polyvagal theory helps explain this gap between memory and reaction. Developed by neuroscientist Stephen Porges, this model describes how the autonomic nervous system carries a built in hierarchy of responses, shaped across the arc of human evolution and mirrored in how the system develops even before birth. Your body does not check a calendar before deciding how to respond to a raised voice or a sudden touch. It checks its own internal history, comparing the present moment against every past moment that once meant danger, and it answers accordingly, often before your conscious mind has caught up.

Studies using fear conditioning show that this alarm based response can develop and persist in the amygdala regardless of whether a person is consciously aware of what triggered it. Researchers Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun, who introduced the concept of post traumatic growth, found that this positive psychological change does not require distress to disappear first. It can develop directly alongside ongoing symptoms. One of the five growth domains they identified through the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory is personal strength, the recognition that you are sturdier than you believed, forged specifically by having to manage what you went through. Their original research also found that women tend to report more of this growth than men, and that people who have lived through genuinely difficult events report more positive change than those who have not. Growth and lingering symptoms are not opposites competing for the same space. They often exist together while your body continues learning that it is safe.
